In Other News

Oh what you miss if you don’t sit home all day reading a dozen news services. And I don’t mean the agitprop from Fox or the mindless poop from the networks. So here are some stories that caught my eye which you might find thought-provoking.

First, the countries south of the Rio Grande are setting up a new Western Hemisphere organization that excludes just Canada and the United States. It’s being organized by Mexico, with a whole bunch of support from other Latin Americans who didn’t like the U.S. domination of the Organization of American States.

Second, Albania is blocking an investigation of war crimes alleged to have happened during the late 90s. It is suggested that maybe 300 Kosovar prisoner were surgically relieved of saleable body parts before they were murdered.

Third, the Washington Post’s Dana Millbank was been supping at the cup of Emanuel too long. A piece Sunday which idolized the Obama Chief of Staff while trashing his political opponents in the White House was an embarrassment to the very notion of journalism.

Fourth, you might recognized the name General George Casey. He was in charge of our forces in Iraq. He mucked things up worse than they had been. Then they put him in charge of the Army. As if his opinion was worth anything, he told Congress that they shouldn’t dump "don’t-ask-don’t-tell" while there are two wars going on. Shame, too, on John McCain for agreeing with him.

Fifth, you’d be given a pass if your memory of Janet Jackson’s "wardrobe malfunction" is fading, but the matter is still before the courts six years later. The Black-Robed Nine ordered the Third Appeals to reconsider their tossing out of the FCC-levied $550,000 fine for the meaningless display.

And sixth, we’re building a new embassy in London. Apparently the one that has served since the 18th Century is no longer appropriate, so we’re building a new structure in another part of town that will cost more than a billion dollars.
