Generic Health Care

Years back drugs companies were selling a product to treat human heart conditions priced at $30 a pop. Not much in today’s world when most people are too insured to care. But big pharma was also selling the same drug to cure an ailment in sheep for only $2 a dose.

That story came to mind recently when I popped down to the local drug store to get a bottle of medicine for a skin condition. The price was $52. Later I called CostCo and discovered that they sold the generic for only $12. Online I found a place that sold generic for less than $5 and shipped it for free. I should note that they couldn’t yet ship to California, due to various state paperwork issues that had been going on for months and months, so it went to my brother-in-law in Massachusetts who sent it on to me.

Something is clearly wrong with this picture. For the record, I would feel a lot better if everyone in the Congress who opposes a universal single payer system were staked out on an anthill. Haiti would be a nice spot.

The solution to the health care crisis is simple. Provide Medicare-at-cost for every citizen. This would remove the avaricious insurance industry from their sacred position between Americans and better health. It seems this solution is beyond our grasp because the Congress is in the pockets of the insurance industry.

Other nations are clear that it is a basic human right to have access to the professional care and resources that enable people to live healthy lives. Our whole country would be in much better shape – physically and emotionally – if we all had affordable health care. The side effects would be marvelously restorative. Many of our other problems would be reduced in their severity if we were healthier souls.

As a critical first step, I would be suggest we elect some generic leaders instead of the professional politicians we could never afford.
