Bits & Pieces

Bits and pieces from this reporter’s notebook.

Da-deet-da-deet...When arrogance marries ignorance, there’s often a problem. Kwame Kilpatrick knows that. Well, maybe he doesn’t. The former mayor of Detroit had gotten off easy on charges of lying, but then he blew his probation. Facing the judge again, he asked for compassion. Said his honor, "That ship has sailed." Kilpatrick was led off in handcuffs for five years in prison.

Da-deet-da-deet...A friend of mine who would like to see the world as a rosier place offered this sample perspective: "What if Ahmadinejad were really a good man who realized that the only way to extract Iran from the control of the mullahs was to pretend to be the whacko we all know and hate so that he could pell-mell pursue the paths he’s on appearing to be odious and dangerous and then suddenly seem like he made a mistake and drop the country into the lap of a sane policy which would leave the religious crazies and the revolutionary guard without power." Well, I said, it would be better than what we have now.

Da-deet-da-deet...Barack Obama says he’s dispatching 1200 National Guard troops to the Mexican border. If ever there was a too-little-too-late response...first because we really need about ten times that number of be serious about closing off the border, and second it looks like he responded only after there was so much complaining in the media...by conservatives and liberals alike.

Da-deet-da-deet...In other presidential reaction news, Mr. Obama is going to get a first hand look at the BP spill. One wag noted that this president hadn’t yet had his "bullhorn moment" as had his predecessor after Nine-Eleven. Well, bull something.

Da-deet-da-deet...Finally, American Lori Berenson has been paroled by a high court in Peru. She served 15 years of a 20-year term on charges of aiding leftists guerillas; charges she consistently denied were true. The prosecution says they will appeal.
