Bits & Pieces
Bits and pieces from this reporter’s notebook.
Da-deet-da-deet....Seeing the results of the British elections was a mixed blessing. On the one hand it was good to see a country go to the polls and choose their government without violence. On the other, the spinning was of the same craven aroma we see here. The culture minister of the Labour Cabinet must have been on drugs to come up with this one: "This is no small victory for Gordon Brown, who deprived the Conservatives of a majority." Had he been the chief morale officer on the Titanic he would have said, "Not to worry, we’re just stopping for ice."
Da-deet-da-deet....Burning the midnight oil has its costs. A new study says that you increase your risk of dying early if you don’t get at least six hours of sleep a night. Lack of sleep can increase susceptibility to develop diabetes, obesity, hypertension and high cholesterol. And don’t be fooled into thinking a nap will fix things. You might feel better, but a nap won’t restore your true health.
Da-deet-da-deet....This AP lead says it all, almost. "Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun, coming off a year marred by health problems, an NCAA investigation and a disappointing performance on the court, signed a five-year, $13 million contract." Imagine if he had done well last year. Or think of how UConn might instead have hired 34 more teachers ever year for the term of coach’s contract.
Da-deet-da-deet....And finally, a Picasso painting was sold at a world record auction price of $106 million. It took fabled painter only one day to produce "Nu au Plateau de Sculpteur" which in English translates into "Nude, Green Leaves and Bust" in case your French is rusty. And pardon me, but any work of art valued at more than, say, $250,000 should have to be kept in a museum where it is available to all art lovers. Senor Picasso would have preferred it that way, too.
