Bits & Pieces
Bits and pieces from this reporter’s notebook.
Da-deet-da-deet...When you read the accounts of how the would-be Times Square mass murderer was identified so quickly, ya gotta be pleased. When you read the accounts of how the surveillance that had him lost him and that he managed to get on a flight to Dubai while his name was on the no-fly list and paying cash, well, not so pleased. And when you heard the administration saying the system worked, pshaw.
Da-deet-da-deet...Wing-nut response to the oil spill has exceeded expectations. Michael Brown who screwed up the Hurricane Katrina response said he thinks maybe the White House let it get worse so they could back-pedal on their drilling plans. Texas governor Rick Perry called it an act of god. Sarah Palin said it was "very tragic" but added, "I want our country to be able to trust the oil industry."
Da-deet-da-deet...The head of the Dallas Fed was warning about banks getting too big since 2004, but was ignored. Noted Richard Fisher from 1990 the ownership of the 10 largest banks climbed from nearly 25% to 60% last year. Too big to succeed, perhaps.
Da-deet-da-deet...The International Olympics Committee has taken away a bronze medal from China’s gymnastics team for the 2000 games. Apparently one of the team members was underage. Said American Dominique Dawes, whose team was belatedly awarded the bronze, "I'm thrilled that my teammates and I, 10 years later, will finally be able to enjoy the medal we deserved."
Da-deet-da-deet...Finally a conservative columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle has raised a question that represents the bottom line as Californians seek to elect a new governor. Debra J. Saunders headlined her column Tuesday with the question, "Whitman can spend, but can she govern?" Whitman has spent zillions buying a large lead in the primary campaign, but Saunders’ questions hangs over The Golden State like a Damoclean Sword.
