Bits & Pieces
Bits and pieces from this reporter’s notebook.
Da-deet-da-deet...The folks who serve New York City apartment buildings as doormen, supers, elevator operators and the like are threatening to strike. They make an average of $40,000; benefits add another $30,000 to their cost. (UPDATE: They settled.)
Da-deet-da-deet...Not in the same boat, the head of UnitedHealth Group pulled in $100 million by exercising stock options last year.
Da-deet-da-deet...The Shiite government controlling Iraq, for the moment, apparently learned from their American occupiers and set up a secret prison where they have held and tortured hundreds of "disappeared" Sunnis.
Da-deet-da-deet...A British pollster looking at a jump in survey results for the liberal party observed, "The left has for years had this fantasy of two big center-left parties dominating British politics, and Labour seems to think they see this coming now. But this is the Liberals putting them in third place. They’re cheering the arrival of the undertaker."
Da-deet-da-deet...A new study shows that TV weathermen are far less likely to believe in climate change than are real experts. More than half say they don’t believe in global warming and a quarter say they think it’s a scam. Meteorological experts are usually better educated than the TV forecasters, and they haven’t the need to pander to mindless viewers to maintain their ratings.
Da-deet-da-deet...A draft audit of the U.S. Postal System says its current business model is "not viable." The USPS has asked Congress to let it cut back from the mandated six to five delivery days a week. How ‘bout three days a week? No one needs bills and circulars more often than that.
Da-deet-da-deet...The vice chair of the California Republican Party sounds like a birther. Tom Del Becarro told a reporter, "I certainly don't have enough information to decide that. I've never seen yay or nay either way, so how could I know?" Um, like read a newspaper?
