Bits & Pieces
Bits and pieces from this reporter’s notebook.
Da-deet-da-deet...A Reuters report said U.S. and South Korean investigators think the South Korean naval ship that went down after an explosion that left dozens killed was probably hit by a North Korean torpedo. That’s hardly good news, considering the level of tensions between the two countries. It would have been better if it had been a mine. It would have been better if the boat hadn’t gotten so close to the North Shore.
Da-deet-da-deet...Maybe the reason why Republicans make so much noise about Ronald Reagan is there hasn’t been a decent leader since. ‘Cause he wasn’t great himself, and most people seem to agree on that, at least according to one index. In a survey asking American if they think The Great Communicator’s face should be on the $50 bill, 79% of no, and that included 71% of Republicans.
Da-deet-da-deet...A children’s clothing manufacturer in Great Britain has bowed to pressure and pulled a line of swim wear off the shelves. Those with padded bikini tops for seven-year-olds. The company apologized for what a critic called "premature sexualisation and unprincipled advertising."
Da-deet-da-deet...King Tut’s father’s toe has been returned to Egypt by Switzerland. It was apparently purloined during an examination of ancient bones in 1907. The trail between then and now has not been revealed.
Da-deet-da-deet...A Dutch nurse has been released from prison having served seven years on charges of killing patients. On appeal it was decided the patients had died of natural causes. Unlike what happens in our system, the prosecutor didn’t dispute the decision but apologized to the nurse.
Da-deet-da-deet...Finally, music lovers shouldn’t be heading for Somalia. The insurgent forces controlling the area have ordered Somali radio stations to stop playing songs because they are unIslamic. They should heed William Congreve who said, "Musick has Charms to sooth a savage Breast, To soften Rocks, or bend a knotted Oak."
