Bits & Pieces

Bits and pieces from this reporter’s notebook.

Da-deet-da-deet...Why should the Catholic Church be different when so many institutions are coming apart at the seams? On Friday the pope’s personal preacher compared the uproar over the rape of children by priests, and titularly sanctioned if not abetted by the Vatican, to the "more shameful aspects of anti-Semitism." Un-huh, and maybe they’ll start referring to the fallout as the Holycost.

Da-deet-da-deet...For those of you who may have picked up your last unemployment check, consider the plight of Jamie McCourt. She’s in the midst of a messy divorce. She and her husband are the owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers and now she’s gonna have to get along on only $150,000 in support. Not a year. A month.

Da-deet-da-deet...Medical experts are saying what a lot of women don’t want to hear. A third of breast cancer is avoidable. You’d think everyone would be elated, but avoidance in this situation means that women have to eat better – that means less junk food – and get more exercise. It will be a tough choice for many.

Da-deet-da-deet...A BBC headline read "Blind Turkish pop singer beats world speed record in Ferrari." Apparently this fellow drove around some airport in eastern Turkey averaging 181 miles an hour. He took instructions through an earpiece in his helmet from a former rally drive following in another car.

Da-deet-da-deet...Speaking of records, a Connecticut girl has won the 35th annual contest for the vilest sneakers in America based on "condition and odor." Of course it’s a promotional gimmick for a product designed to reduce shoe stink.

Da-deet-da-deet...And finally, the San Francisco police crime lab has been compromised by an investigation of a lab tech who might have been dipping into the drug evidence. It may turn out now that thousands of cases have been jeopardized. (This just in....we now learn that she had gotten a D+ in biochemistry, too.)
