Bits & Pieces

Bits and pieces from this reporter’s notebook.

Da-deet-da-deet...You might have heard about the chief morale officer on the Titanic saying, "Not to worry. We’re just stopping for ice." The line came to mind with the story that 29 state Republican chairmen – plus those from Guam and the District of Columbia – signed a letter saying Michael Steele was doing a great job. They gave him credit for recent victories in Virginia, New Jersey, and Massachusetts where the Dems put up donkeys.

Da-deet-da-deet...Sarah Palin objected to the President signing a treaty to reduce the number of nuclear weapons on our dear blue planet Earth. Responded Obama, "if the secretary of defense and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff are comfortable with it, I'm probably going to take my advice from them and not from Sarah Palin."

Da-deet-da-deet...Meg Whitman has dumped another $20 million into her primary campaign, pushing her total to almost $80 million. She’s got more than a billion dollars, so big honk. But you gotta wonder about what she’s thinking... about what she could possibly do if she wins. Dissolve the legislature? Sell off Los Angeles?

Da-deet-da-deet...California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizer is trailing Whitman in the polls by 40 points. So he put up a TV spot that had a couple of minor points correct. The Sacramento Bee political editor said, "Just about everything else in the ad is either misleading or simply false."

Da-deet-da-deet...One of the reasons the health care reform bill passed was because insurance companies announced enormous rate hikes just before the vote. Don’t know if it was arrogance or just incredible stupidity. Anyway, undaunted, Wellpoint announced that their CEO was getting a 51% raise to more than $13 million.

Da-deet-da-deet...And finally, the crew of the airplane that crashed killing much of the Polish political and military hierarchy was told several times not to land, that they were below the glide slope. "Nevertheless," said a Russian Air Force official, "the crew continued the descent."
